In 1929, Nestlé was presented with the challenge of helping to conserve surplus coffee beans from Brazil in the wake of the Wall Street crash. And Nestlé accepted.

Max Morgenthaler was tasked with creating a delicious cup of coffee by simply adding water. Max and his team worked very hard to find a new way to repair an instant coffee that preserved the natural flavor of coffee. In 1938 they found the answer and Nescafé was born. In naming it they used the first three letters of Nestlé and the suffix "coffee", Nescafé became the new name for coffee.

When Nescafé was launched in Switzerland for the first time on April 1, 1938, it was predicted to be a great success. However, then World War II began. During the war, Nescafé was a staple in the food rations of the U.S. forces, and they loved it because it was a quick, easy and delicious coffee.

After the war, NESCAFÉ was exported to France, Great Britain and the U.S., and American troops became ambassadors for our brand by spreading their love of NESCAFÉ.

Throughout the rest of the 1940s, NESCAFÉ's popularity grew. Today, NESCAFÉ® is enjoyed in more than 180 countries and has become the world's favorite coffee, thanks to some of its flagship products such as Nescafé Dolce Gusto.
